What Are Run-Flat Tires?

Run-flat tires are built to buy you time to find an auto shop or a safe place to change your tire after it has deflated. This decreases the likelihood of becoming stranded on the side of the road while you switch to your spare.

How Do Run-Flats Work?

There are two basic types of tire systems for run-flat tires: self-supporting and auxiliary supported. Auxiliary support employs the use of a hard rubber ring or other structure that is able to support the weight of the vehicle as the tire loses air. More commonly used is the self-supporting system. Good Year’s Run On Flat (ROF) technology is considered self-supporting. The sidewall construction is reinforced and stiff, which allows the tire to be driven on even after losing all air pressure. ROF technology requires that your car be equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system to alert you of air loss.

What Are The Benefits of Run-Flat Tires?

Run-flats are more stable than traditional tires in puncture situations due to the sidewall’s ability to retain its shape and drivability. Even if you were to instantly lose all tire pressure, your tire will help you to maintain control of your vehicle better than a conventional tire. Another great benefit to relying on run-flat tires is avoiding a tire change on a busy, dangerous road. This key selling point is one of the reasons Run On Flat technology was originally created. Keep in mind that each tire manufacturer has different driving specifications. Be sure to find out how fast and how far is safe to drive on your run-flat tires. Good Year recommends a top speed of 50mph for up to 50 miles for tires with ROF technology.
